Spacetaker Artist Resource Center – December 2011 Events
Spacetaker presents a host of arts-related public events in November,
ranging from a weekly Cultured Cocktails happy hour benefitting a new
arts group each week, an exhibition in the ARC Gallery, and professional
development workshops for artists. All Spacetaker events can be found it

Spacetaker’s Cultured Cocktails at Boheme
Every Thursday from 5 – 10 p.m.

Free and open to the public
Every Thursday, Spacetaker and Boheme host a different local arts group.
At this special happy hour, get up close and personal with the artists
that make Houston unique. Even better, a portion of the proceeds from
the event benefits the artists. Cultured Cocktails was recently awarded
“Best Happy Hour of 2010” by the Houston Press!

ARC Exhibition: Sketchy Neighbors presents The Saddest Love
Story Almost Never Told: Based on a True Idea

Spacetaker presents a group exhibition by Houston artist collective
Sketchy Neighbors to round out its 2011 ARC Exhibition Series. The
Saddest Love Story Almost Never Told: Based on a True Idea will showcase
new work by each Sketchy Neighbor based on ideas submitted by the public
as well as a collaborative installation using various media. Expect to
see drawings, paintings and sculptures in a multitude of media and
materials including black velvet, found objects, custom snow globes, and
other surprises. The Sketchy Neighbors are Marisa Avelar, Anthony
Butkovich, Brenda Cruz, Jordan Johnson, Katsola, Devon Moore, Melissa
Perez, Chris Thompson, and Jeff Whiteley. More about Sketchy Neighbors

ARC Workshop: Intro to Civic Art

non-members (cost at the door is $10 for Spacetaker members and $20 for
non-members)
Director of Civic Art & Design for the Houston Arts Alliance Matthew
Lennon offers a general overview on how Houston artists can engage in
the civic art world. This workshop will cover: What makes civic art
different from studio & grant based art and how to navigate; Recent
projects and their problems/successes; What makes a good civic art
project proposal; Contracting and client relationships; The team the
artist needs to succeed; Intro into temporary civic art programming. The
Houston Arts Alliance Civic Art Team initiates, manages and maintains
civic artworks throughout Houston.
ARC Workshop: Career Seminar for Musicians – Being Your Own
Agent & Music Licensing

In this day in age, many "emerging artists" are creating work for
themselves by becoming more entrepreneurial in their endeavors. This
two-part career seminar for musicians (from classical to indie rock and
more) will cover relevant topics for the development of a musician’s or
music group’s career. Classical musician rockstar and founder of Impulse
Artist Series Jade Simmons will cover what it means and what it takes to
be your own agent, covering such topics as brand management, crafting an
artistic package, what a modern-day manager is looking for in a
modern-day artist. Texas Accountants & Lawyers for the Arts staff
attorney and musician Erin Rodgers will cover copyright laws & music
licensing. Co-presented by Impulse Artist Series, Texas Accountants &
Lawyers for the Arts, and Spacetaker.
